According to the Private Health Insurance Ombudsman (PHIO), you should be reviewing your health insurance policy at least once a year.

This will help you prevent gaps from creeping into your cover, as well as make sure you're not paying for cover that you don't actually need.

In addition to this, whenever a significant event takes place in your life - such as when you get married or divorced, have a child or reach certain age milestones - you should also review your health insurance policy.

It's Dementia Awareness Week, and Alzheimer's Australia is organising events all over the country.

The theme of this year's seven-day event, which is running from September 16 to 22, is "Brain Health: Making the Connections".

This was also the theme of Dr Kristine Yaffe's presentation, which took place at Parliament House in Sydney today (September 16).

The Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (AIHW) has just released a report titled 'Asthma Hospitalisations in Australia 2010-11'.

This reveals that people suffering from asthma are now spending less time in hospital than ever before.

Louise York, spokesperson for the AIHW, revealed in a September 11 statement that Australia has one of the lowest rates of hospitalisation for people with asthma in the entire world.

Cancer Council Victoria has revealed that more and more people are intending to quit smoking.

The organisation's latest survey demonstrates that 26.5 per cent of smokers in Victoria are intending to quit within the next 30 days.

When this survey was last conducted in 1999, only 18.4 per cent of those who participated had the same response.

Australians suffering from type 1 diabetes have asked the government to support research into the disease.

The government has responded, promising $35 million in funding as part of its Policy to Support Australia's Health System.

This welcome boost will be managed by the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF), which is "the world's largest charitable supporter of type 1 diabetes research".

We all know that smoking while pregnant is not a good idea.

However, the risk it poses to your health and that of your unborn child increases dramatically if you have asthma.

This was uncovered by research that was recently undertaken at the University of Adelaide.

According to the Australian Healthcare and Hospitals Association (AHHA), 170,000 women from South Australia took part in the decade-long study, which was the first of its kind.

The research was released to coincide with National Asthma Awareness Week, which will conclude tomorrow (September 7).

Australia has the seventh most efficient healthcare system in the world, according to a study that was recently conducted by Bloomberg.

We were beat out by Hong Kong, which took the top spot, followed by Singapore, Japan, Israel, Spain and Italy - but making it into the top 10 is still something to be proud of!

The study judged each country on three criteria: life expectancy, healthcare costs (as a percentage of GDP per capita) and overall healthcare costs (per capita).
