Opposition Leader Tony Abbot today unveiled his health and hospitals policy package, vowing to better fund and reform the sector.  His key $3.1 billion promise will see 2800 new public hospital beds delivered over four years, in line with the Australian Medical Association's recommendations.

The Federal Government, has announced its plan to take a $300 million ''special dividend'' from government-owned health fund, Medibank Private and has brought strong criticism from the private health industry.

Martin Laverty, the chief executive of Catholic Health, said the effects of the $300 million taken from Medibank Private would be felt by the all users of private health services.

The Federal Government has advised that the implementation date for its proposed changes to the Private Health Insurance Rebate Tiers legislation has been revised due to the rejection of the legislation by the Senate to date.

Under the Tax Laws Amendment (Medicare Levy Surcharge Thresholds) Act (No 2) 2008, the income thresholds are indexed each year by using indexation factors calculated for full time adult average weekly ordinary time earnings. 

The Australian Taxation Office (ATO) has advised that for the 2010-11 income tax year the income thresholds will be as follows: 
• Singles Surcharge Threshold: $77,000 
• Family Surcharge Threshold: $154,000 (the family threshold increases by $1,500 for each dependent child after the first).

The federal government has announced an additional 9150 places for the employer-sponsored migration program which will be balanced by a cut of 3600 general migration places.

The overall size of Australia's migration program will remain the same but there will be a greater focus on the nation's skills needs.

The Australian Government has decided to temporarily suspend the acceptance of certain General Skilled Migration (GSM) visa applications. This temporary measure will begin on 8 May 2010 and is expected to remain in effect until the end of 30 June 2010.

The temporary suspension applies only to primary (main) applicants for the following visa subclasses: Subclass 175, 176 and 475.
